Land grading for construction
Whether you are a construction contractor or building your own property, you will need to have your land graded so that runoff water can drain away from the foundation (toward the street drain, a ditch or a property drain). We can clear the land by removing trees, stumps and large rocks. We use an excavator or mini-excavator to perform land grading and/or land clearing.
We recommend that our customers consult their municipality’s planning department to obtain advice and a permit for the land grading work. This will ensure that your land grading plan complies with applicable requirements.
There are several factors to consider when planning land grading for residential or commercial construction. Water must not accumulate near the foundation to the point where the French drains cannot handle it. This is why the land should not slope toward the foundation, and water runoff should not be directed toward neighbouring properties. In addition, walls and flower beds should not obstruct water drainage.
It should also be noted that when performing land grading before paving a driveway (residential parking area), the driveway should not be higher than the surrounding areas so that water can drain properly.
Land grading for landscape design

For flat hiking trails, a concave surface helps direct water away from the walking area. If the trail is on a slope, it should have a 5% cross slope or a cross slope proportional to the grade (for example, a trail with a 20% grade should have a 20% cross slope to ensure proper water drainage).
When grading different types of roads (urban roads, rural roads, gravel roads, alleys, etc.), we follow the slope standards outlined in the Canadian Guide to Road Geometric Design. Whether the roads have medians or not, clear zones or not, curves or intersections, we apply the appropriate slope to the surfaces we pave.
